Playback engine query PT 13.3

Hi.

After upgrading to PT 12.3 I found I could not open past sessions. I got the message 'Current playback engine does not support a sample rate of 44.1 khz'. I cured this by changing the playback engine to 'MBox Pro' from 'Windows Audio Device'. All appears to be OK but what has this change done?

Also I deleted my HD drivers as I do not run an HD system is this advisable?
